On this trip I rented a bike, a service which included any spare parts and maintenance I might need along the way.
Cycling luxury.
Of course that meant nothing went wrong at all, not even so much as a puncture. Never mind a broken spoke.
With the luxury of a whole fortnight to prepare I also took the opportunity to go out and buy some real cycling clothing. In fact I was beside myself with preparation, and having a support vehicle meant I even took a normal amount of casual wear for the evenings.
Well, normal for me.
I still managed to fit the whole lot into the same 47 litre bag that I went round the world with.
Bike:
Leperniere lightweight mountain bike (rented)
Cycling clothes:
Pearl Izumi short sleeve base layer top (2)
Altura long sleeve base layer top (1)
Altura ‘night vision’ waterproof jacket (1)
Endura longs (1)
Altura padded lycra shorts (2)
Gore cycling waterproof trousers (1)
Footwear:
Meindl Gore-tex trainers
The waterproof trainers were supposed to keep my feet dry.
On the occasions where we had to walk through small rivers they managed to keep my feet wet for hours afterwards.
